Unpack & Reset: 5 Things to Do When You Return “Home”

I’ve taken to calling my Arizona apartment “the place I keep my suitcases and do my laundry.”

My East Coast friends and family know I never quite feel like Scottsdale is my forever home, but it works for now.

In any event, I’m back from a 2-week “strollabout” (as I’ve taken to calling these adventures).

Thankfully, I was able to do a couple of wash loads at some of the many places I stopped along the way, but I need to quickly get back into “real life” habits this month — before I leave again.

Here are my unpacking and resetting tips as a veteran digital nomad.

  1. If you have the energy, unpack and do your laundry immediately. Yup, that includes folding. Run out to buy basic stuff (or order it online), so you don’t collapse from hunger/thirst or be tempted to eat that stale expired cereal in the back of your cabinet.
  2. Attempt to get back into regular sleep, eating, and workout habits but…
  3. Cut yourself a little slack. For example, I returned on a Tuesday, but I’ve declared Thursday “Get Back Day.” Of course, I have work and errands to do tomorrow, but I know I won’t be performing at 100% of my usual energy level.
  4. Make plans that will give you things to look forward to before your next Bleisure Living excursion. Make a short list of must-do activities that you have to be “home” to accomplish. Balance work and play. Treat your day-to-day life as if it’s a workation too, and build in new experiences, exploration, socializing (if that’s your jam), and fun!
  5. If you love to journal (like I do), make a short list of the places you went, the people you met, and what you learned. Google Photos and Canva are also great for creating visual “memory books” for your trips. And, if you want to share your travels and reviews with the world, please get in touch with me about contributing to the Bleisure Living website! We are accepting guest posts!

My next overnight trip (unless I decide to do a weekend jaunt to LA or another nearby option in October) will be to New York in November for this conference, most likely combined with meeting my newest grandchild, Thanksgiving festivities, and The English Beat at my fave music venue.

So, while I fold that laundry (one of my least favorite things to do in life!) I’ll visualize my next Bleisure Living adventure and try to inspire you to do the same!
