Pack in 20 Minutes (Stress-Free)!

I admit…I’m a power packer at this point (and I love alliteration). I’ve been on the road for work since I was 22, which means I have 40+ years of Bleisure Living packing under my belt. Speaking of which, belts may be one of those items that can easily be forgotten.

But let’s get back to (packing) business and leisure. Here are my quick tips for stress-free packing.

  1. Make a list and stick to it. I keep mine on my phone and copy and update it based on the weather and what I’ll be doing on my trip. If you organize it by day, you can create entire “outfits” from the same items. See #3. Check the items off as they go into your bag, and don’t be tempted to add more stuff!
  2. Buy extras of the basics. I keep my travel sneakers and all my travel toiletries and cosmetics in pre-packed bags so that I can skip those items.
  3. Create a capsule wardrobe. Traveling light is way easier in the summer, but I’ve discovered a long cardigan and one great pair of boots can go a long way. (Don’t overdo the shoes!) Lots of items can be dressed up or dressed down these days.
  4. Run through a “worst-case” scenario in your head. Unless you’re going to a remote part of the world, you’ll be able to find emergency items at Target, Walmart, or an overpriced hotel gift shop.
  5. Pack a lightweight, washable laundry bag and fill it with clothes you’re really done with on the road. Simply throw it in the washer when you get back. De-stress your unpacking too!

And remember to stash a healthy snack or two (like single-serve nuts, dried fruit, or protein bars) in your carry-on! You will be able to get a blood sugar boost at any time and will save money in the long run. And no one likes a hangry bleisure living traveler!
