Intergenerational women dressed in the same pants

The New Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

The original “coming-of-age drama” involved a group of girls and one pair of thrift store jeans.

Our Bleisure Living version involves one pair of very comfy Free People Quinn pants and the two women who love them.

Because we’re grown-ass professional women we don’t have to share a pair.

We (me and Karla, our Fashion Editor) each own them.

Karla and I met years ago when she was still in high school in Yonkers. My company was marketing a fashion day camp for teens that year, and we discovered that we were both passionate about fashion, travel, mentorship, and technology.

Despite our 35+ year age difference, we bonded over those loves and have stayed in touch over the years. Karla went to college, built her career in tech, and discovered that she still wanted to work in and around the fashion world—as a stylist and fashion marketer.

We came up with the idea of the “one pant/two lives” post one day when we were comparing notes on which travel staple pieces we can’t live without.

What we love about the “new traveling pants”

  • At $50 a pair, they are a steal.
  • They are lightweight and pack easily.
  • Even if they wrinkle, they look like they are supposed to be that way.
  • You can dress them up or down.
  • Their drawstring waist means that even if you splurge during your dining adventures, you don’t have to worry that they will be popping open at the end of your excursion.
  • They are flattering for any body type. Karla’s are an XS and mine are a M.
  • They have POCKETS

But what we love most of all is that they’ve created a new bonding moment for both of us, reinforcing the fact that age is just a number and that generations need to continually look for commonalities rather than differences when working and playing with people who were born in different years.

In the feature photo, I (Nancy) was at a gathering of women >50 in Rhode Island (where I gave my phone to the fabulous Lisa Arnold, who creative-directed me). Karla was at her friend’s 1 year old son’s birthday party in Kirkland (yes, like the Costco brand), Washington.

We’ll share where our pants and other fashion items are traveling every couple of months.

Consider getting your own pair and joining us!

(Or, please reach out if you’d like us to style and model something you make or sell!)
