Yurt Don’t Hurt: Go Off the Grid!

In 2023, the average person spent 151 minutes — more than 2.5 hours each day — logged into social media.

Sometimes we need to NOT be part of that statistic.

I recently went “off the grid” to the 28 Palms Ranch.

After an extremely busy kickoff to 2024, I traveled to one of the most off-the-beaten-path places I’ve ever stayed: A Joshua Tree National Park Yurt.

At first, I was terrified at the idea of not having a proper hotel lobby, wifi, or TV.  I gave plenty of notice to my co-workers and explained I truly would be out-of-office.

Most managers and colleagues today will understand. And, if they don’t, perhaps you need to re-evaluate your Bleisure Living goals.

I loved my stay in a yurt, located just 20 minutes from Joshua Tree National Park and only an hour from busy Palm Springs. The airport has dozens of direct flights across the country each day.

I admit. The experience was “glamping.” Each yurt has lots of privacy, is extremely clean, and has a heater/AC.

The best part was the incredible stargazing that will make you feel like you are on another planet. The outdoor shower is a wonderful place to refresh and ruminate.

For those of you who can’t stop thinking about work, I’d recommend bringing a journal to capture your thoughts. I was shocked at how much creativity I was able to tap into while being completely logged out.

Of course, when traveling to a yurt or anywhere off the grid, I’d recommend packing lots of extra snacks and drinks. My breakfast consisted of the healthy, protein-packed, plant-based Taos Bakes Bars, which I picked up at the Fancy Food Show (another recent Bleisure Living trip). They kept me fueled for the day ahead.

The yurts are located within a 15-minute drive of several great dining options and have grills and tons of quality supplies should you want to cook up something for yourself.

So, yurt yourself and don’t hurt yourself when you find yourself getting overly stressed about work. Even if you’re “yurting” somewhere less exotic, you’ll return to work feeling refreshed!
