“Keep Calm and Carry On” was a motivational poster produced by the British government in 1939 in preparation for World War II.
It’s also my mantra when traveling, especially during the holiday season, which can feel like going into battle — navigating crowds, travel delays, and relatives. Whether I’m a houseguest or settling into an Airbnb, these three essentials help me stay grounded while away from home.

Loose Leaf Tea and an Infuser
Although I love discovering indie coffee shops on my trips, I also like having tea. Drinking tea is a calming experience and offers more variety of flavors than coffee. Right now, the tea I am drinking is a handcrafted blend called Southwest Sage, which captures the flavors of Arizona (smoky black tea with sage, vanilla, rooibos, and clove). It’s like having a piece of home with me. Since it is a loose-leaf tea, I also need an infuser. As a Chicago native and fan of socially conscious brands, the Grosche Chicago series of travel water bottles with tea infusers checks all the boxes for me.

Essential Oils
Aromatherapy is another tool I use to maintain zen on the road. I like to bring essential oils with me. My favorites are lavender for relaxing before sleep, frankincense for grounding, and citrus blends are great when I need an energy boost. A few drops on a tissue or cotton ball tucked into a ziplock bag in my purse is all I need when I am on a flight. The tiny bottles are easy to tuck into a cosmetic bag, and a travel-size diffuser is safer than candles for transforming any space into a personal sanctuary.

A Journal and Pen
Journaling is my go-to tool for reflection and mindfulness. It helps me process experiences, set intentions, and practice gratitude.
I carry a small notebook or travel-inspired journal and pen, ensuring I can jot down thoughts no matter where I am. On mornings in a new location, I enjoy writing about my intentions for the day, and in the evenings, I reflect on the moments that brought me joy or insight. This ritual keeps me connected to myself and aligned with my goals.
These are easy ways to incorporate mindfulness practices away from home. With a little preparation and a few meaningful items, you can stay grounded and present, no matter where life takes you. These essentials have become my anchors, helping me carry calm and intention wherever I go.
