The Bleisure Living Road Trip: 7 Reasons to Get Behind the Wheel

Fly or drive?

That was rarely a question when I worked in the corporate world in New York and traveled for business.

But now that I’m a free agent, the thought of a leisurely drive through scenic vistas in the Southwest, traveling at my own pace, is rather appealing. The weather is usually pretty good, and the en route attractions make the journey pleasant. See below.

Las Vegas and California are relatively close to my home base in Phoenix. So, today I packed my suitcase, threw it in the trunk of my Mini Cooper, and headed to San Diego for the Winter Fancy Faire.

I arrived on time to pick up my badge and catch a good night’s sleep without dealing with any airport aggravation or delays.

What are some of the other benefits of driving versus flying?

  1. You have more flexibility in when you can come and go. The price of gas and tolls is usually less than the price of airline tickets and car rentals/Ubers.
  2. I often travel solo, but have taken trips with friends and colleagues. Definitely more intimate than being packed into a plane seat with random strangers.
  3. Listening to music or audiobooks or calling friends (hands-free, of course) is calming and entertaining.
  4. You have fewer packing limitations (which is very helpful when you’re going to a food show!)
  5. Truck stops are an endless source of entertainment. The wide variety of weird snacks and souvenirs is an added bonus when I gas up and take a restroom break.
  6. Depending on where you’re driving, the vistas can be truly amazing. I traveled past sand dunes, a wide range of greenery and rock formations, and a wind farm. Seeing a sign that I have entered a new state is oddly exhilarating.
  7. If you have flexibility, you can visit friends along the way or see attractions. Remember, the leisure and living in Bleisure Living are what make memories and not just money.

Even if you don’t work for yourself, consider the occasional road trip when you need to travel for work. You may return better rested and with some wild and wacky stories and truck stop oddities!
