Hurricane HELP! What to do?

Over the last months, the world watched Hurricane Helene and Milton devastate communities across the United States.

We couldn’t help but think about all those traveling. Here are our tips for what to do, both from a business and leisure perspective, when hurricanes, blizzards, or other weather conditions wreak havoc on your plans.

  1. Communicate Early! Your friends, family, and colleagues are worried about you. Check in with both work and personal relationships and let them know the most up-to-date timeline for your area. It’s key to let them know what your plans are and when they should expect to hear from you again.
  2. Know your travel rights. Airlines don’t fly during hurricanes, and if your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a refund, not just a voucher. For the most up-to-date information, I recommend following both the airline and your airport’s social media accounts. If you do have to make additional purchases, save your receipts! Many airlines waive the difference in fare during these times as well.
  3.  Haven’t left yet? If your home base is unaffected, this might be a time to stay home, as choosing to work remotely in an area that’s at risk might not go over well with your manager and job. We always advise booking changeable and cancellable flights and hotels when possible.
  4. Practice Gratitude. While changing travel plans might be frustrating, people’s lives are turned upside down. Perhaps a way you can feel connected to the community you were to visit is by finding a local organization to donate to.

Nothing is more disappointing to the Bleisure Living aficionado than having to cancel or modify a trip, but when bad weather strikes, the most important tip is to BE SAFE. Our entire team keeps those impacted by the recent storms in our thoughts.
