Fit on the Road

For those of us who love to travel, staying on our healthy eating and exercise game can be a challenge.

You may have heard of the Freshman 15 (weight gained at the start of college). Don’t allow yourself to become a victim of the Travel 20 (or more)!

Your exercise and eating habits could ultimately result in better Bleisure Living® because you’ll have more energy and self-esteem. (And avoid the need for a seatbelt extender!)

Hotel gyms are not only a great place to get fit, but you can often meet like-minded adventurers at the treadmill or bike. (Or, schedule gym meet-ups with contacts.)

  • Pack lightweight sneakers and workout attire so you don’t have an excuse not to bring them along. Take walks wherever you go and track your steps.
  • Find out if your gym offers reciprocity with other workout centers or if gyms at your destination sell day passes.
  • Avoid too many cocktails and fatty apps at those work networking receptions. Club soda with lime and the crudite table are healthy alternatives. And, if you must imbibe, choose spiked seltzer or hard liquor without sugar-filled mixers.
  • Allow yourself a few splurges throughout your journeys — especially in locations with great food. But limit your portions and don’t overdo them.
  • When you get back home, jump right back into your regular sleep, eating, and exercise routine. Don’t beat yourself up if you went a little wild on the road.

Great food and beverages and socializing over meals are a big part of travel. But you want to live longer to enjoy more adventures.
