Healthy Vegas: 5 Tips for Living Clean in Sin City

Yes…you read that title correctly.

You can attend conventions in “Sin City” and spend a few days downing large quantities of booze, staying up way too late, and getting into all kinds of mischief.

Or you can commit to returning home with your muscles and heart strong and your liver intact.

I spent a few days in Las Vegas at the Fontainbleu Hotel.

Committed not to blowing all the progress I’ve made on my healthy life habits, I took away these five suggestions for doing Vegas without destroying your body and brain.

  1. Pack your own breakfasts. Not only will you save a ton of money, you know you’ll be starting the day with energy. I like Clean Simple Eats protein shake packets and One Bars. You can even pack your own smoothie shaker and use it throughout the day for an on-the-go protein fix.
  2. Check out (and use) the hotel gym. The one at the Fontainbleu is terrific. If your time and budget permit, you can also schedule an on-site IV or visit to the spa for a massage. (And remember to always pack gym clothes when you travel. I bought super-light sneakers and an all-in-one workout top to eliminate any excuses)
  3. Walk to the convention center (or wherever your meetings are). You’ll get sunlight and extra steps. Stuck in a hotel? Do a few laps around the casino (but try not to breathe in too much second-hand smoke). The Vdara is a smoke-free hotel if you want to take extra care of your lungs. If you go for an outdoor run or walk, stay safe. Ask the concierge for suggestions. You can also tack on an extra day and visit some of the fantastic hiking and biking trails in the Las Vegas area.
  4. Limit cocktails to a couple of nights only. Order appetizers instead of full meals. If you track your food and drink on an app (like MyFitnessPal), attempt to keep that habit even while on the road. Be honest! Seeing your calories and macros can incentivize you to cut back or make more intelligent choices.
  5. Watch your sleep habits! If you have a late-night partying or simply hanging out with colleagues and friends, attempt to squeeze in at least seven hours. If that’s not possible at night, nap before heading out again.

Partied too hard?

We don’t judge.

Block out some time on your schedule for when you return so you can detox and get back into your (healthier) routine.
