Out of office

Boundaries: Bleisure Living Edition

According to Forbes, job burnout is at an astonishing 66% in 2025!

Although the thought of being able to send emails, attend meetings, and be productive from your resort can be temptig, truly enjoying Bleisure Living involves setting boundaries.

Here are four steps you can take when working away from the office:

  • Define your business hours: Just as you wouldn’t expect your bank to be open at 7:00 am on a Sunday your work time should be set out in advance. This is especially true if you are traveling “back in time” with time zones and begin your workday in the morning, as you could quickly end up working double.
  • Log off and stay off: The best way to set your team and business up for success in your absence is to clearly share your specific working hours in advance and resist the urge to check emails and messages. Taking time away signals to others that it’s okay for them to do the same.  Instead of replying to emails, plan the next day of your adventure or edit your photos!
  • Establish workspace versus play space: Whenever traveling to a hotel, I differentiate public space areas as “work zones” or “leisure zones,” even if it’s as simple as different seats on the room’s balcony or a different section of the lobby. Need a complete change of scenery? Many hotels now offer dedicated day use rooms through sites such as Dayuse and HotelsByDay.
  • Accountability Allies: As a guilty workaholic who has repeatedly said, “Just 5 more minutes” or “One last email,” I know that self-control can be tough. Empower those you are traveling with, or those who know you are traveling, to hold you accountable to your promised work times and be honest with you about overemphasizing business instead of leisure.

Don’t let the work laptop on your resort desk ruin your vacation. Follow the above tips and make the most of your bleisure living experience.

P.S. Of course, we all have those times or projects that require 24/7 diligence. But choose them wisely. Burnout is real, and we all need time for self-care.
