Too Hot? Time for a Coolcation

Summertime and the living is…too hot!

The effects of climate change are driving record-breaking temps in the US and across the globe, including many top vacation destinations.

As travelers rethink holiday criteria and push pause on popular, now steamier, options a new trend has emerged.

What’s hot when it’s too hot?  Coolcations.

Coolcation destinations tend to be in higher altitudes with temperatures below 75F, lush greenery, and close to water and water-based activities.  Top-ranking locations offer rich cultural experiences in cooler, rejuvenating climates; most are in or near cities, which can easily accommodate bleisure living pros.

If you’re looking to beat the heat and the crowds, check out these top trending destinations:

  1. Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark): This cooler-climate region offers the best of both worlds: trendy cities like Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm, surrounded by the northern lights, reindeer, fjords, and endless natural gems. Bonus? According to Bloomberg, recent currency depreciation in the region means more bang for your US buck.

Banff National Park and Lake Louise:  This stunning region of Alberta, Canada is a nature-lover’s wonderland.  Scenic lake drives and bikeways, over 1,000 miles of hiking trails, striking turquoise waters, and the famed Fairmount Chateau Lake Louise:  do as much or as little as you want in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.
  3. Patagonia (Chile, Argentina):  It’s winter south of the equator, and many travelers are visiting Patagonia and Torres Del Paine National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, in the off-season.  800,000 square KM of mountains, glaciers, hiking, scenic drives, and unique wildlife species; you’re guaranteed to be unplugged and chill in no time.
  4. Scottish Highlands: Northern Scotland‘s mountainous terrain offers charming villages, castles, and breathtaking views along the rugged coastline and the infamous Loch Ness.  Kayaking, cycling, hiking galore, all within close proximity to quaint inns eager to accommodate workcationers.
