The more I travel, the more I change up my “nest” (where I store my suitcase and carry-on and do my laundry between trips).
Like a bird (or summer owl) coming home to roost, I treat my 600-square-foot apartment as a waypoint (or boujie truckstop, if you prefer) in my travels.
If you are (like me and Matt) someone who spends at least 25% of your life on the road, Bleisure Living, organize your house or apartment to make travel easier and packing more efficient.
- Keep your luggage in an easy-to-access spot and, as we mentioned in our Packing tips, stock your bag with an extra set of essentials. (I even have a spare pair of lightweight sneakers.)
- Bookmark sites like “Mail Hold” to prep for longer trips more efficiently.
- Use the buddy system and let a trusted friend or neighbor know when you leave town.
- Leverage technologies like Ring, Nest, and other apps to manage your energy and security while you’re away.
- Economize and downsize when you’re “at home.” Don’t buy more food than you can possibly consume in between trips, or make sure the things you buy can be frozen and thawed for when you return. Make sure too that you have supplies of non-perishable basics like laundry detergent and paper goods in your home, so you don’t have to dash out as soon as you get back.
- Plan a “reunion” (happy hour, hike, or other gathering) with best friends or family when you get back, so you don’t fall into a post-trip slump.
I sometimes even have my house cleaning (one of my few luxury indulgences) done the day before I travel so my home will be sparkly fresh when I return (and start to plan my next adventure).
