Hub airports (Boston Logan, JFK, LAX) provide tons of options, but can also seem like a maze. Consider smaller airports for great deals and easy travel!
Smarter Travel offers a list of smaller airports all over the country that can save you major time and money. If you don’t see an airport in the list that works for you, Google Flights also has a “nearby airports” function that makes finding flights a breeze.
While hubs are still your best bet for major airlines and options, airports like T.F. Green (about an hour away from Boston Logan) offer everything from international to cheap domestic flights on lesser-known airlines. For example, Boston.com reports that you can fly from T.F. Green to Europe for as low as $65 on Norwegian Air. Smarter Travel also suggests Waco Regional Airport as an alternative to Dallas/Fort Worth and cites its free parking and low fares as major draws.
What’s the catch? You definitely lose some optionality with these non-hub airports. If your flight is cancelled or delayed, you may be stuck waiting as long as a week for the next one. Your in-airport dining and entertainment options will also be limited (while SFO could keep you occupied for days). But if you’re flying in good weather conditions and looking for a great deal, give the little guys a shot!
