ating healthily and exercising is often tougher on the road. The trick is – blow up the excuses! When you’re on the road, unless you have thought ahead, you’ll be at the mercy of whatever captures your attention (airport doughnut or that second fruity cocktail) and the scale will remind you of your fails when you get back. After a trip, here’s how to avoid the “I gained weight, I feel exhausted so I might as well slack off the whole week” kind of feeling.
Plan
Get a calendar or journal – a smartphone is great, but lately I’ve found myself reverting back to paper for specific goals. Something about writing forces commitment. Check out the fitness journals, below.
Think ahead and schedule in your workouts just like meetings. It doesn’t have to be long – short and sweet – less than 30 minutes will do it. Waiting for a flight? Walk the 30 minutes around the airport and use your fitness tracker to monitor those steps.
Don’t leave meals to chance. Figure out where you are going to eat and plan ahead what you’re going to order. Lots of calorie/nutritional breakdowns can be found online for popular venues.
Pack
Throw your workout gear and sneakers in on the top of your suitcase. This way right when you open it up – you will be reminded! Find a pair of super-light sneakers, to eliminate the “I don’t want to pack extra stuff” excuse. You can even pack your workout attire INSIDE your sneakers.
I’m in love with this bottle! Super sleek, and fits into any purse, suitcase etc…no excuses for not hydrating while traveling. So cool – and so many colors.
Perform!
Now Do it! Move. Start with a walk, run, skip, or jog for 5 minutes and then start your workout! That’s half the battle – starting. Or, make an appointment with a personal trainer at the hotel gym before you arrive. Just knowing someone is waiting for you will be motivation!
Get an app. Now there’s really no excuse! We all have seven extra minutes in a day, and we all have a smartphone. These workouts can be done anywhere – by the pool, waiting in line, even on the elevator if you’re staying on the top floor of your hotel.
Get a jump rope. I love this one from Rogue Fitness…..I use it almost every day. This is the quickest way to get in cardio anywhere, any time. Small, light, and perfect for packing. Plus it’s fun; channel your middle school self and get back to gym class.
Remember the three P’s of staying fit while bleisuring.
And you can treat yourself to one special splurge — pizza, pastries, pasta, or prosecco when you return!
